Eleven year-old Carrel Richards captured the Javelin record by throwing his purple javelin 23.39m (76.09 feet) at the Junior Olympic District Qualifiers in Hopkins, SC on May, 31st. The previous record of 17.65m was set in 2013.
“Next, I’m going to set a new record for South Carolina’s USATF by throwing 130 feet”, claims Richards. Richards who has been throwing least than two weeks believes anything is possible. His coaches at Emerald City Elite Track and Field Club are amazed at how quickly he took to the sport. Richards finished the SC AAU Junior Olympic District Qualifiers with a first place medal in the hurdles and second place in long jump.
Richards will try to capture another Gold medal at the AAU Regional Qualifies in Hampton, Ga. He is also competing in the USATF Junior Olympic Qualifiers in Myrtle Beach, SC.
