Students athletes of MacCanDo performed very well for their rookie year at the AAU National Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa on the first week of August.
Barbara Nguyen and Elena Wang competed in long jump. Although Nguyen missed to advance to the finals by 1 inch in the long jump, she is now ranked 28th place in the nation out of 63 jumpers of her age group.
Christian Eik received his personal best at a 34.07 feet in shot-put, missing finals by 1 foot. In Javelin throw, he placed 16th in the nation out of 32 competitors in his age group in his rookie year.
Joseph Morrison competed in the 200-meter hurdles, but was plagued by a recent injury, which disqualified him for the finals.
Dominic Eik screamed to a time of 13.43 in his 100m dash race, but fell short to faster times for the finals.
Michael Baun created a method of running his 800m race in his own way and it was successful. He came out 6th in his heat, with a time of 3:00.16.
The intermediate boys 4×100 relay competed at their highest for this season and missed the finals by several faster times than them.
MacCanDo “Roosters” (they were born in 1993 - a year of rooster) relay team, composed of Nguyen, Lam, Molina, Xie, is the only one relay team composed of all Asian-Pacific islander athletes competing at the AAU National Junior Olympic Games this year. This is probably the first time in the history of AAU Track & Field Natinal Junior Olympics.
For celebration, the team will host its 5th Annual Banquet and Award Ceremony on Saturday, August 22 at the San Francisco Elks Lodge.
