AAU meet on April 22 to feature local talent
ALTON — Jordan Lumpkins has some big track shoes to fill. But at age 7, he’s already following in the footsteps of dad Jamie and uncle Lester "Bo" Scott, both former Alton High track athletes.
Jamie will be coaching Jordan for the Ultimate Speed Academy team on Sunday, April 22 in the St. Louis Storm AAU track meet at Public School Stadium.
Events for the USATF competition will get going at 8 that morning.
"Jordan asked me if he could run track and this is his first track team," Jamie said. "He loves it."
And Jordan Lumpkins, a first-grader at St. Louis Charter School, seems to be pretty good at it, too.
He finished second in the 55-meters for his age group at the AAU nationals recently at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. Jordan also ran on the 4x400-meter relay team that took second.
Dad Jamie was a quality hurdler and sprinter at AHS. He ran on the 4x400-meter relay team that finished sixth in the state during the 1995 large-school finals. Now, Jamie is working at Marathon Petroleum in Wood River.
Bo Scott was one of the greatest track athletes in Redbirds’ history. His specialty was field events.
He won the IHSA long jump title in 1972 after finishing second at state in 1971. "Lester is Jordan’s great-uncle," Jamie said.
The Ultimate Speed Academy expects to have more than 120 participants for the AAU meet on Wigger Track.
Another ex-AHS standout, Todd Lockhart, will assist Jamie with coaching duties. Lockhart, a 1,000-yard rusher for the football Redbirds, is Jordan’s uncle.
The entry deadline for the AAU meet in Alton is April 20.
Participants can compete in Pee Wee through Midget divisions. Athletes as young as 6 years old and no older than 18 by July 31 are eligible to compete.
The divisions are: Pee Wee (2006 birthday), Sub Bantam (2004-05), Bantam (2002-03), Midget (2000-01), Youth (1998-99), Young (1996-97) and Open (1994-95) are welcome to compete.
There will be competition in the 1,500-meters, the 800-meters, the 1,500-meters race walk, the 4x400-meter relay, the 100-meters, the 55-meters, the 200-meters, the 3,000-meters, plus the long jump, triple jump, high jump and discus.
Medals will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place finishers. There will be ribbons for those athletes finishing fourth, fifth or sixth.
